Are window feeders safe for birds?

Yes — and they can actually help. Birds visiting a feeder mounted directly on the glass can’t build up speed before reaching the window, which is why wildlife organizations suggest placing feeders within about 3 feet of a window (or more than 30 feet away). For other large windows in your home, add markings on the outside of the glass.

Tips to keep it stuck

  1. Clean the glass and the suction cups with warm soapy water, then dry both.
  2. Press each cup firmly, pushing air out from the center.
  3. Install on a mild day — suction cups grip poorly on very cold glass.
  4. Re-seat the cups every few weeks, especially after big temperature swings.

What to put in it

Use hulled sunflower chips or black-oil sunflower seed for chickadees, titmice and finches. Hulled seed avoids a pile of shells on your windowsill. Small feeders empty fast, so top up often and wipe out the tray when it gets damp.

Frequently asked questions

Will birds really come to a window feeder?

Yes, though it can take a few days to a few weeks. Start with seed birds already know, and place the feeder on a quieter window if possible.

Will my cat scare the birds?

Birds may hesitate if a cat sits right at the window. Many households find birds adjust over time; some people use a window film or move the cat’s perch.

Can squirrels reach a window feeder?

On upper floors or windows away from ledges and trees, usually not. Ground-floor windows near branches or railings are more vulnerable.
