Your privacy matters to us. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it and the choices you have. By using our website, you agree to the practices described below.
1. Information we collect
- Information you give us: your name and email address when you request a free download or sign up for emails, and the details you provide in our contact form.
- Tool inputs: answers you choose in our birding tools are processed to show your results and are not saved by us.
- Photos for identification: if photo identification is available and you upload a photo, it is sent from our server to our AI provider solely to generate an identification and is not stored on this website. Please don’t upload photos of people.
- Technical information: such as IP address, browser and pages visited, collected through server logs, security tools and cookies. To prevent abuse, our tools temporarily store a one-way hashed version of your IP address for a short time to limit request rates.
2. How we use information
- Deliver the free ebook or checklist you requested and send occasional birdwatching emails (only if you signed up).
- Respond to your messages.
- Operate, secure and improve the website and tools.
- Measure the performance of our content and advertising.
We never sell or rent your personal information.
3. Third-party services
- AWeber — email list and delivery. When you sign up, AWeber processes your name and email under its own privacy policy.
- Amazon Associates and other affiliate programs (such as Awin) — when you click an affiliate link, the retailer or network may set cookies to attribute purchases.
- Google — we use Google tags to measure advertising performance, which may use cookies.
- Cloudflare and our hosting provider — deliver and protect the website.
- Wordfence and Akismet — security and spam protection.
- Contact Form 7 with Cloudflare Turnstile — contact form and bot protection.
- AI provider — processes uploaded photos for the bird identifier, when that feature is enabled.
- YouTube — some pages offer videos that only load from YouTube (privacy-enhanced mode) after you click play.
Our fonts are hosted on our own server, so no font requests go to third parties.
4. Affiliate disclosure
Some links on this site are affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. See our affiliate disclosure.
5. Cookies
Cookies are small files stored by your browser. We and our partners use them for security, measurement and affiliate attribution. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; some site features may then work differently.
6. Your rights and choices
- Unsubscribe from emails at any time using the link in every email.
- Request access to, correction of or deletion of personal information we hold.
- Disable cookies in your browser.
Depending on where you live (for example, in California or the EU/UK), you may have additional rights. To exercise any of these rights, email [email protected].
7. Data security
We take reasonable precautions to protect information, but no method of transmission over the internet is completely secure.
